The Launchpad of Residentail Vedanta Courses

“A college of Knowledge”

Sandeepany Sadhanalaya, the first Chinmaya Mission residential academy of Advaita Vedanta, welcomed its inaugural batch of 30 students in 1963. Envisioned as a modern-day Gurukula in Powai, Mumbai, it is named after Rishi Sandeepany, the Guru of Lord Krishna.

Marking the beginning of a powerful spiritual movement, the academy has been instrumental in training numerous students who have gone on to become Acharyas and spiritual leaders, spreading the teachings of Vedanta globally. Notable alumni include Swami Purushottamananda, Swamini Sharadapriyananda, and Swami Jyotirmayananda.

Graduating hundreds of students and spreading the light of Vedanta for over fifty years, Sandeepany Sadhanalaya commenced its 19th residential Vedanta Course in 2024. This course is led by Mukhya Acharya Swami Swaroopananda, the Global Head of Chinmaya Mission, and Resident Acharya Swami Advayananda.

Built with Love

A Legacy of Devotion and Generosity

Sandeepany Sadhnalaya, Mumbai has been built entirely through funds raised from Swami Chinmayananda's Jnana Yagnas and donations from devotees.

In 1959, Srimati Tara Swaroop donated 3 acres of land atop a hill overlooking Powai Lake. The same year the Tara Cultural Trust was formed to oversee the project (Regd. 19.01.1960).

Initially, the ashram featured a classroom, called Saraswati Nilayam, along with a dining hall, kitchen, hostels, and an Acharya cottage. In 1964, the foundation stone was laid for the now-iconic Jagadeeshwara Temple at the hilltop.

A Home for Study, Sadhana, and Seva

Sandeepany Sadhanalaya offers a comprehensive residential environment for its two-year Vedanta course, catering to brahmacharis and students from all backgrounds. Facilities include men’s hostels (Vivekalaya & Vairagyalaya) and women’s hostels (Yashodalaya) for simple, comfortable accommodation; a dining hall; kitchen; and Acharya cottages. All essentials are provided, ensuring that students can focus on their studies and sadhana. The day begins at 4:30 a.m., with classes conducted in Saraswati Nilayam or the serene Jagadeeshwara Temple, and concludes at 9:00 p.m.

Shankar Vihar provides headquarters for the Global Head of the Chinmaya Mission and accommodation for the resident Acharya for the two year Vedanta course.

Sandeepany Sadhanalaya is also the home base for Swami Tejomayananda (Guruji), former global head of Chinmaya Mission. Guruji resides at Anand Vihar, a six-storey primary residential wing where daily spiritual satsangs and bhajan sessions are held. Additionally, a dedicated household team in Anand Vihar ensures the smooth running of the residential Vedanta course and overall ashram activities.
