More important than what is behind you and what is ahead of you is what is In you. Seek it. Centred in it, act and live.

About Jnana Yajnas

‘Jnana Yagna’ is the name given by Swami Chinmayananda to the Mission’s free public talks on the scriptures. In ancient times, a yagna was a fire sacrifice where prescripted items were burned in a pit to gain a beneficial outcome. In a Jnana Yagna, or knowledge sacrifice, ignorance of our true nature, is ‘burned’ in the fire of Vedantic knowledge of the Self.

This concept was explained by Swami Chinmayananda at his very first talks in Pune in 1951. The first yagna was attended by 5 seekers. Hunger for hearing the Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita in an inspiring and accessible way for every level of society, was such that, by the 1960s, audiences in India numbered in the tens of thousands.

Vedanta anywhere, anytime

Moving with the times

Vedanta anywhere, anytime

Jnana Yagnas remain Chinmaya Mission’s primary mechanism for spreading Vedanta. Now, moving with the times, talks can be delivered online as well as in person. Jnana Yajnas are offered as a five to seven day series of public talks on a Vedantic text, presented live by a Chinmaya Mission teacher.

Chinmaya Mission Acharyas are invited throughout the year, by Mission and non-Mission devotees, to conduct Jnana Yajnas, satsangs, seminars, workshops, discourses and other special events.

Organizing a Jnana Yajna is an effective way to introduce Vedanta to a community. Many talks are recorded and made available online. Talks are also delivered live online by expert teachers. Chinmaya channel on YouTube is an excellent source for these.

The Yagna Spirit

Cooperative effort for personal growth

Jnana Yajnas are regularly organised by all Chinmaya Mission centres. The yagna model enabled Swami Chinmayananda to engage the diverse interests, talents and resources of local groups in a cooperative endeavour with a noble purpose - the spread of Vedantic wisdom to all.

For the organisers, Jnana Yajnas are cooperative endeavours that unite bands of like-minded people and provide a field for their learning and spiritual growth. For the attending community members, the event has manifold benefits at their personal, familial, and societal levels.
