Adi Shankara Nilayam

A timeless spiritual treasure

Adi Shankara Nilayam is famous as the maternal home and reputed birthplace of Shri Adi Shankara. What place could be a better torchbearer for Sanskrit Research and Indic Studies. Under the guidance of Swami Chinmayananda, the historic property was acquired by Chinmaya Mission with the blessing of the living descendants of Shri Adi Shankara.
The property, in existence from at least the early 8th century, exudes the grandeur of the era to which it belongs and the unique beauty of ancient Kerala stonework and architecture. The temple complex from the era of Sri Sankara (where he likely worshipped with his mother, the noble Aryamba), is built in the inimitable Kerala style and is home to numerous idols and shrines of immense antiquity.
